St. James - Church Fete

Saturday 12th September

Despite much rain during the morning, the weather cleared up in time for the Official Opening of the Fête by Cllr Francis Purdue-Horan (Mayor of Rushcliffe) and the new vicar of Normanton on Soar & Sutton Bonington, Revd Michael Brock.

A good number of people turned up and enjoyed the beautiful grounds of St James Church on the banks of the River Soar.  There were a large selection of stalls and games, raffle, tombola, boat trips on the river (with thanks to Soar Boating Club), refreshments and a barbeque.  During the afternoon, Ken Godfrey’s Central Jazz Band entertained everyone in the Churchyard, and to give the band a break, Normanton on Soar Village Choir sang a few songs in the Church – ranging from religious and gospel music to the Beatles and Elton John.

Each year, all the proceeds from the Church Fête go towards the upkeep of the 900 year-old St James Church, to keep it in good order for future generations.  The current priority is to undertake a full overhaul of the 110 year-old Church organ next year.

It was a very enjoyable afternoon, and the Fête raised over £3,050.  We are most grateful for our sponsors, who were listed in the programme, those who manned the stalls, set up the Fête and dismantled it afterwards; and special thanks to all those who came along to support the event.
