St. James - What the Church needs

The Parochial Church Council (PCC) wishes to encourage more people to become involved in the Christian faith, particularly children and young people, encouraging them to organise and take part in concerts, festivals and services, as well as doing everything it can to “open-up” the church not only to the parish but also to the wider community. It also has statutory duties under new legislation to provide for full participation by disabled people, and needs to cater also for the deaf and hard of hearing. With this in mind, a PA system including an Induction Loop has been installed.

Its historical interest and wonderful setting make the church an ideal location for holding both religious and secular events, and it now has new central heating boilers and pipework.

With such an old building, there is always work to carry out, to make sure that the Church is in sound order for the benefit of future generations.

The Church has an Alfred Kirkland organ built about 1900. It has a nice tone, and suits the size of the Church. In recent years, the organ has given a few problems some pipes not sounding at all, others not speaking cleanly etc; and the action is getting noisier. Also, from time to time, notes sound without even touching them! The organ has been serviced and tuned annually for many years by Mike Thompson, and he has recommended a full overhaul at a cost of £20,422 plus VAT. We have been fundraising specifically for the organ, and we are most grateful for all donations, large and small. Significant donations from The Paget Trust, the Helen Jean Cope Trust, the Soar Boating Club and Kate Clayton in memory of Maurice have boosted the total raised, and the Organ Fund currently stands at £13,600. The work on the organ will take about 3 months, and we are hoping that we will be able to have this carried out in Autumn 2016. Any further donations will be gratefully received..
